limey
|
|
Slang term in other English-speaking countries for an immigrant from Britain, and hence for anyone British. It was originally applied to British sailors, who were forced to drink a daily measure of lime juice. Captain *Cook's remedy for scurvy had led to compulsory lemon juice on ships from 1795; it was replaced from 1865 by the cheaper and slightly less effective lime juice.
