(1851–3, Keble College, Oxford) Painting by Holman *Hunt which became, through engravings and photographs, one of the best-known images in 19C Britain. The figure of Jesus, bearing a lantern on a moonlit night, knocks on the door of a house. His eyes look directly – half inviting, half accusing – at the viewer. There are other versions, painted by Hunt himself, in Manchester City Art Gallery and in St Paul's Cathedral.
