(National Council for Civil Liberties) Pressure group formed in 1934 by Ronald Kidd (1889–1942), as a result of witnessing the police treatment of hunger marchers in London. It has remained an independent non-political organization, campaigning against any restrictions on civil liberty and often taking test cases to court. Topical issues in recent years have included sexual and racial discrimination, prisoners' rights, privacy and freedom of information. Known as the NCCL until 1989, the council has campaigned since 1989 under the name of Liberty.
