(1899–1962) Plump character actor with an exceptionally mobile and expressive face. A career on the West End stage was followed by international success in films in the 1930s – particularly in the title roles of The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933, for which he received an Oscar), Rembrandt (1936) and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), and as Captain Bligh in Mutiny on the Bounty (1935).
