Harold Larwood
|
|
(1904-95) Extremely fast and accurate bowler, playing cricket for Nottinghamshire (1924–38) and England (1926–33). He became a controversial figure on the 1932–3 tour of Australia, when his captain (Douglas Jardine, 1900–58) devised the 'body-line' strategy which won the series against a side including Don Bradman. Larwood, who took Bradman's wicket in four of the five matches, was instructed to bowl with maximum speed at the leg stump (in effect therefore at the batsman's body). The controversy unjustly ended Larwood's Test career, and he emigrated to Australia in 1950.
