(d. 1228) Archbishop of Canterbury from 1207, though the opposition of *John, the English king, kept him out of his see until 1213. He encouraged the barons to demand *Magna Carta and was instrumental in persuading *Henry III to reissue it when he came of age, in the definitive version of 1225. He had been a powerful support and influence throughout the young king's minority.
