Constant Lambert

(1905–51)
Conductor and composer who was closely involved with the early years of British ballet. He was still a student when he was commissioned by Diaghilev to write his first ballet (Romeo and Juliet 1926), and he was musical director of the Vic-Wells ballet from its beginnings in 1931 (see *Royal Ballet). His Rio Grande (1928) is a setting for chorus, piano and orchestra of a poem by Sacheverell Sitwell.
