(1922–86) Exceptionally successful off-spin bowler who played *cricket for Surrey (1946–59), Essex (1962–4) and England (1947–59). His most extraordinary achievement was in the 4th *Test against Australia at Old Trafford in 1956, where he set two records still standing in 1992 – the only occasion on which all 10 wickets have been taken by the same bowler in a Test match innings (10 for 53), and the highest number of wickets taken in any *first-class match (19 for 90).
