Area of exceptional beauty in Cumbria, designated in 1951 a *national park (2292sq.km/885sq.m). The lakes include *Windermere, *Ullswater, *Derwentwater and *Coniston Water. Among the peaks are Helvellyn (950m/3118ft) and *Scafell Pike, the highest point in England. The region acquired a specific link with the Romantic movement through the *Lake Poets.
