The Lady
|
|
Britain's oldest women's magazine, founded in 1885 by Thomas Gibson Bowles and still owned by his descendants. The first issue declared the Lady's intention 'to cover the whole field of womanly action' and to be 'at once a valuable friend and a delightful companion'. It has evidently achieved both while remaining plain, practical and resolutely unglossy, though it still aims – as its title implies – at the more privileged and old-fashioned section of the market.
