Holman Hunt
|
|
(William Holman Hunt, 1827–1910) One of the founding members of the *Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, who painted some of the best-known images of Victorian England including The *Light of the World and The *Scapegoat. He is characterized by intense realism, bright and sometimes garish colours, with often a lightly concealed moral or symbolic meaning – as in the sheep tempted by forbidden delights in The Hireling Shepherd (1851, Manchester City Art Gallery) or in the human moment of guilty self-realization in The Awakening Conscience (1854, Tate Gallery).
