Godfrey Kneller
|
|
(Gottfried Kniller, c.1646–1723, kt 1692) German-born painter who studied in Amsterdam and travelled in Italy before settling c.1675 in England, where he succeeded *Lely as the leading portrait painter. His best-known work is his series of portraits of the *Kit-Cat Club. The great house survives which he built for himself at Whitton, to the west of London; it was largely rebuilt in the 19C and is now, as Kneller Hall, the home of the Royal Military School of Music.
