King's Road
|
|
(London SW) The main thoroughfare through *Chelsea. From the late 17C to 1830 it was for much of its length the king's private road towards royal properties upstream at *Hampton Court and *Kew. Its modern fame as a shopping street derives from *Peter Jones at its eastern end and, since the 1960s, from its many boutiques. In the 1980s *punks became the local exotica, attracting tourists with their weird and colourful display and then charging for a photograph.
