King's College, London
|
|
Founded in 1828 by the two archbishops and by 30 bishops of the Church of England in response to the 'godless' affront of *University College, which has traditionally remained King's great rival; both are now part of *London University. The godly college did not insist on the undergraduates being Anglicans, but the professors had to be. Its building on the Strand (1829–31) was designed by *Smirke, and from 1839 there was a linked King's College Hospital. The hospital moved in 1913 to its present location on Denmark Hill in southeast London.
