(55,000 in 1991) Town in Hereford and Worcester which from 1735 produced the type of carpet known by its name; it was a double cloth carpet (meaning flat-ribbed, without pile, and with the pattern in reversed colours on the back, of a kind also known in later forms as ingrain or Scotch). It was the first carpet to be produced partly by machine. Since the late 19C the town has been a major producer of machine-made *Axminster. A particular type of Axminster loom (the gripper) was developed in Kidderminster in about 1900.
