Kensington Gardens

(London W8) Now forming an uninterrupted western extension of *Hyde Park, they were originally the private grounds of Kensington Palace. *George II allowed access on Saturdays to any who were 'respectably dressed' and the gardens have been fully open to the public since the reign of *William IV. The Round Pond dates from 1728. There are two well-known statues: Physical Energy, a naked rider on a horse by G.F. *Watts; and *Peter Pan by George Frampton (1860–1928). At the southeast corner of the gardens is the *Albert Memorial.
