Kennel Club

(London W1) Organization established in London in 1873 as the result of a newly popular type of event, the dog show; the first of its kind, held at Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1859, was a competition for pointers and setters. As the number of shows increased, it became evident that some national system for registering the breeds and names of competing dogs was required. The founders of the Kennel Club aimed to fill this gap and saw their first task as the compiling of a register of pure-bred dogs and their pedigrees; the Kennel Club Stud Book has been an annual publication from 1874. Since 1948 the club has organized *Crufts Dog Show.
