Houghton Hall

(23km/14m NE of King's Lynn) Palladian mansion built 1722–35 for Robert *Walpole, to designs by Colen *Campbell modified by Thomas Ripley (d. 1758). It survives virtually unchanged, with magnificent interiors by William *Kent who also painted the murals flanking the mahogany staircase and provided much of the furniture. The centrepiece of the state rooms is the Stone Hall, a precise cube (12m/40ft in each dimension) adorned with cherubs and portrait busts.
