Battle of Jutland
|
|
(31 May 1916) The only full-scale battle of World War I between the heavily armoured British and German fleets. It took place in the North Sea, west of Jutland (north Denmark). The German High Seas Fleet was smaller than the British Grand Fleet, and the German strategy was to redress the balance by engaging half the British fleet under *Beatty before *Jellicoe could bring the rest from *Scapa Flow. In the event the entire Grand Fleet reached the scene of battle and the Germans escaped with some difficulty in the early hours of the following morning. But they had inflicted more damage than they had suffered, causing the day to be claimed as a German victory. It was also seen as a victory in Britain, because the balance of power was unchanged and the German fleet remained in harbour for the rest of the war.
