|
A sporting cockney grocer and the outstanding character in the literature of fox hunting. He was created by R.S. Surtees (Robert Smith Surtees, 1805–64) in a series of sketches for the New Sporting Magazine, published in book form as Jorrocks's Jaunts and Jollities (1838) with illustrations by *Phiz. In Handley Cross (1843) Surtees wrote his first and most successful novel featuring Jorrocks, by then a master of foxhounds with a grand house in the country.
