(1573–1652) Architect and stage designer who introduced new and influential Italian styles to England. After his first visit to Italy, some time before 1603, he began designing for court *masques. In them he used the perspective scenery which he had seen in Florence; this gradually became the dominant scenic convention in the English theatre and remained so until the 19C. He returned a committed *Palladian from his second Italian journey (1613–14); his subsquent buildings pioneered the classical themes which have remained such a major part of British architecture. These were first seen in the *Queen's House at Greenwich and then in Whitehall's *Banqueting House. In the 1630s he laid out London's first formal square in *Covent Garden. He trained as his assistant a nephew by marriage, John Webb (1611–72), best known for his work at *Wilton.
