(1903–41) Pioneer aviator who captured the nation's imagination with an extraordinary solo flight to Australia. Her previous longest flight had been from London to her home in Hull. She set off from *Croydon aerodrome on 5 May 1930 in a tiny Gipsy Moth, reaching India in six days (a record) and Australia in 19. She continued to make record long-distance solo flights during the 1930s as well as double flights with James Mollison, whom she married in 1932. She was reported missing over the Thames estuary when flying for the Air Ministry in 1941.
