Gwen John
|
|
(1876–1939) Welsh painter, elder sister of Augustus *John, whose style is as reserved as his was flamboyant. In 1895 she followed her younger brother Austustus to the Slade School of Art in London.Subsequently she spent most of her life in or near Paris, where she studied with Whistler – whose muted tones influenced her palette – and had a long affair, from 1904, with Rodin. Her subtle introspective studies, most often of a woman alone, have brought her a steadily increasing reputation. In their lifetime the esteem was all her brother's; now the situation is largely reversed.
