jersey
|
|
A general term now for a wide-range of machine-knitted fabrics, deriving from the strong knitting tradition of Jersey in the *Channel Islands (the word was applied to knitwear, particularly stockings, from at least the 16C). Since the 19C it has been also used in Britain for a woollen garment, usually with sleeves, which is pulled on over the head – based originally on the versions worn by Jersey fishermen.
