(southern tip of Mainland, *Shetlands) Site showing continuous occupation from the *Bronze Age (probably earlier than 1000 BC) through the *Iron Age, followed by Norse settlements, a medieval farmstead and finally a 16C manor house. The misleading name, limiting the importance of the place to one period (it is Norse for 'earl's court'), was the invention of Walter Scott, who set part of his novel The Pirate here.
