|
Company which developed from the trade with China established by two Scottish merchants, William Jardine (1784–1843) and Nicolas Matheson (1796–1878), who set up business in Canton in 1832. Their early success was based on smuggling opium into China, in collaboration with the *East India Company – a highly profitable undertaking defended by Britain in the *Opium Wars.
