Jane Seymour
|
|
(c.1509–37) Queen of England from 1536, as the third wife of *Henry VIII. She was the daughter of a Wiltshire knight, and became lady-in-waiting to *Catherine of Aragon and then to *Anne Boleyn. Her rejection of the king's advances, unless made honourable by an offer of marriage, no doubt hastened her mistress's end; Jane became betrothed to the king the day after Anne's execution. She gave birth to the future Edward VI in October 1537 and died 12 days later.
