James III
(1452–88) King of Scotland from 1460; son of James II and Mary of Gueldres; married Margaret, daughter of Christian I, king of Denmark, Norway and Sweden (1469).
He was the third successive king to inherit the throne as a child. Like his predecessors he was plagued by unruly nobles, and in his case by ambitious brothers – one of whom, Alexander Duke of Albany, was for a while recognized as the Scottish king by *Edward IV. But the dowry of James's Scandinavian bride brought useful gains, in particular the ceding to Scotland of Norway's rights in the Orkneys and Shetlands. Defeated by rebels near Stirling in 1488, James was murdered in the immediate aftermath of the battle. He was succeeded by his son *James IV (see the *royal house of Scotland).
