|
|
(1394–1437) King of Scotland from 1406; son of *Robert III and Annabella Drummond; married Joan Beaufort (1424).
Sent by his father to France in 1406, his ship was intercepted by an English vessel and he spent 18 years as a well-treated captive at the English court. In 1424 he married Joan Beaufort, a granddaughter of *John of Gaunt, and returned to Scotland. He suppressed the anarchy prevailing among the nobles, and established a group of permanent judges which developed into the Court of Session.
