Car company founded in 1945 by William Lyons (1901–85). It evolved from his Swallow Sidecar Company, established in 1922, and became famous both for its sports cars and its saloons. The XK roadsters, introduced in 1948, were followed by C- and D-type racing sports cars (five wins at Le Mans) and in 1961 by the *E-type. In 1966 the company merged with the *British Motor Corporation.
