Isis
|
|
The name by which the Thames is known at Oxford, perpetuating an ancient academic fallacy. The Roman name for the river was Tamesis. In about the 14C scholars decided that this was a combination of Thames and Isis; they therefore assigned the name Thames to the river below Dorchester and Isis to the upper reaches. Isis is also Oxford's second crew, competing before the main event on the day of the *Boat Race.
