The Irish
|
|
The inhabitants of *Ireland, both north and south. The majority are Roman Catholics, descendants of people who were in Ireland before the *Reformation; but there is a minority of Protestants, concentrated in *Northern Ireland (where they are a majority), descending from English and Scottish settlers in more recent centuries. The Northern Irish are British citizens, and people from the republic of Ireland have for historical reasons been allowed the right to live and vote in the UK (see *immigration). The Catholic Irish form one of Britain's main immigrant communities, particularly in the west coast cities of Liverpool and Glasgow.
