Administered by Britain as a *mandated territory from 1920 until its independence in 1932. The region of *Mesopotamia had previously been ruled as three provinces within the *Ottoman empire, so it was only during the mandate that Iraq took shape as a nation. The British appointed Faisal I (1885–1933) as king in 1921, and the country remained a monarchy until the assassination of his grandson Faisal II (1936–58). See also *Gulf War.
