(1922–92) Camp comedian with an unrivalled ability to dwell, with lingering amazement and disapproval, upon an audience's response to an innuendo; 'titter ye not', he would rebuke them. He acquired a cult status in the 1960s from his appearances at the Establishment (a satirical nightclub founded by Peter Cook) and on That Was The Week That Was. But he was more at home in the Carry On films, in the mock-Roman frolics of the stage musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1963), or on television in Up Pompeii (BBC 1971).
