Inveraray
|
|
(500 in 1991) Town and castle in Strathclyde, planned as an entity in the 18C. The delightful small town has the rational elegance of its origins, with buildings by various members of the *Adam family. The plan was drawn up by Roger Morris (1695–1749), who was also responsible for the exterior of the castle with its early *Gothic Revival details. The interiors are by Robert Mylne (1733–1811), in a more delicate neoclassical style. Inveraray is the ancestral seat of the dukes of Argyll, chieftains of the clan Campbell.
