(26km/16m SW of Perth) Scotland's first lending library. David Drummond (d. 1692) began the collection of books in the 1670s and left a bequest in his will for the library to be maintained 'for the improvement and education of the population'. The present building, in the grounds of Innerpeffray Castle, dates from 1762. The ledger of loans to local people survives from 1747 onwards, but the policy of lending was ended in 1968.
