(London SE1) Established by the government in 1917 to display the history of World War I and to receive the work produced by the official war artists, the museum opened in 1920 in the *Crystal Palace. It transferred to its present building (previously *Bedlam) in 1936. Its theme has remained the history of war since 1914. A huge holding of modern British art (the largest outside the Tate Gallery) is supplemented by documents, weapons and vehicles. Outposts of the museum are HMS *Belfast, *Duxford airfield and the *Cabinet War Rooms.
