New Delhi

Capital of the republic of India since 1947 and previously of British India from 1912, when it replaced *Calcutta. A succession of cities on the site of Delhi date back to 1500 BC. The present one was laid out on a geometrical plan devised by *Lutyens, with broad avenues and plenty of space for villas with large gardens. The design of the government buildings, deliberately combining European and Indian architectural traditions and constructed from 1913, was shared between Lutyens and Herbert Baker (1862–1946). The most impressive is the Viceroy's House by Lutyens (now Rashtrapati Bhavan, the presidential palace).
