(CAB) Network of more than 1300 offices around Britain, where members of the public can seek free and confidential advice on any subject. About 90% of those staffing the offices are trained volunteers, and in an average year they answer some 7 million questions; family breakdown, debt, legal rights and the complexity of the benefits system are among the most common problems. The service, funded mainly by local authorities and the Department of Trade and Industry, was set up in 1939 to cope with family problems in wartime when children and husbands were likely to be far from home as evacuees and servicemen.
