Canary Wharf

(London E14)
Prestige project in *Docklands, which underwent a major crisis in 1992 when the Canadian developers (Olympia & York, owned by the Reichmann brothers) filed for insolvency. The buildings were then complete but only half occupied. At the centre is the vast 244m/800ft Canary Wharf tower, visible from miles around (designed by Cesar Pelli). It stands on the site of the old West India Docks, straddling the Isle of Dogs – a long narrow peninsula on the north bank of the Thames, formed by a loop in the river.
