Cairngorms
|
|
The chief mountain range in the British Isles, with several peaks over 1220m/4000ft (the highest is Ben Macdhui, 1309m/4296ft). It lies between Aviemore in the northwest (the chief ski resort for the area) and Braemar in the southeast, where the range merges with the less dramatic *Grampians. A variety of quartz found here (usually yellow, brown or grey and known simply as cairngorm) is used as a gemstone.
