(b. 1909, kt 1968) The most consistently successful of British football managers. His own playing career was with Manchester City (1929–36, FA Cup win in 1934) and Liverpool (1936–9). In 1945 he became manager of *Manchester United, seeing them through a series of triumphs (5 League victories and 2 FA Cups) and one major disaster (the Munich air crash of 1958). The club won the European Cup in 1968, the year before his retirement.
