The royal yacht, built at the John Brown shipyards in *Glasgow and launched in 1953. With an overall length of 126m/412ft, and a reception room able to accommodate 250 guests, the ship was designed to function as a mobile royal palace (and to double as a hospital ship in wartime). Britannia went out of service in 1997.
