Name of three English rivers (the word is Celtic for a river). The longest, sometimes called the Upper Avon (154km/96m), is the one connected with *Shakespeare; it rises in Northamptonshire and flows through *Warwick, *Stratford-upon-Avon and Evesham to join the Severn near Tewkesbury. The next in length, further south and therefore the Lower Avon (120km/75m), rises in the *Cotswolds and flows south to *Bradford-on-Avon before turning northwest to *Bath and *Bristol; it joins the Severn after passing through the Clifton Gorge. The shortest of the three, sometimes known as the East Avon (about 96km/60m) rises in Wiltshire and flows south through *Salisbury to enter the English Channel at Christchurch.
