ASH
|
|
(Action on Smoking and Health, London W1) Britain's first campaigning medical charity (and most successful acronym). ASH was founded by the Royal College of Physicians in 1971 to promote positive action against smoking after the publication of their report Smoking and Health Now. The charity acts as a pressure group by spreading information about the hazards of smoking and by public relations campaigns – such as the Butt of the Month Award introduced in 1973 for the most appalling tobacco advertisement.
