(1704–76) Inventor in *Sheffield in the late 1740s of a method for making steel of much improved quality, by means of a crucible. The Sheffield cutlers rejected his metal as too hard to work. They then tried to prevent his exporting it to France, finding that French knives and scissors, reimported into Britain, were outselling their own. By about 1750 his secret was discovered and others in Sheffield began using his method.
