Huntingdon
|
|
(16,000 in 1991) Town in Cambridgeshire on the north bank of the Great Ouse, linked by a 14C bridge with Godmanchester on the south bank. *Ermine Street crossed the river here on its way north to York. Huntingdon's more recent fame is its connection with Oliver *Cromwell. The parish register recording his birth bears the marks of a pithy addition, later erased: 'England's plague for 5 years' (referring to 1653–8 when he was lord protector). The school where he was educated is now a museum in his memory.
