Hopetoun House
|
|
(19km/12m NW of Edinburgh) Mansion begun for the 1st earl of Hopetoun in 1699 by William *Bruce. His west front survives, but the rest was encased and vastly increased in size from 1721 by William Adam (1689–1748), who provided the imposing east front with its projecting pavilions in a version of the current *Palladian fashion. The interior decoration was completed after his death by his sons, John and Robert *Adam.
