(pen name of Anthony Hope Hawkins, 1863–1933, kt 1918) Prolific novelist, known now only for his first two books, the romantic thriller The Prisoner of Zenda (1894) and its sequel Rupert of Hentzau (1898). They recount the adventures of an intrepid Englishman, Rudolph Rassendyll, in the fictional country whose name is Hope's greatest contribution to the language – Ruritania.
