In medieval legend the cup used by Jesus at the Last Supper. Joseph of Arimathea was believed to have caught drops of Christ's blood in it at the Crucifixion and to have brought it to *Glastonbury. Only the purest of King *Arthur's knights may succeed in their quest for the Grail. So *Lancelot (impure because of his affair with *Guinevere) is unable to come fully into its presence; his perfect son *Galahad does so and dies in ecstasy.
